Issue Ban on Consumer Fireworks
Council Agenda Item #7(b)
Background.
Because deaths and injuries and fires occur too frequently when untrained consumers and
children light fireworks, several health and safety groups are calling for a ban on
consumer fireworks use About half of all fireworks injuries occur among those under
age 15 In a typical year in July fireworks cause more fires in North America than all
other causes of fire combined
Discussion
At the recently completed Alberta Fire Chiefs Conference, it was announced that this
issue was being announced by the International Fire Marshals and a request for support
for a complete ban on all consumer fireworks The AFCA passed a motion in support of
this initiative and suggested that municipalities consider this issue when developing
bylaws
