CONFERENCE REPORT AND AGRICULTURAL FIELDMANIS REPORT PECIAL COMBINED MEETING WITH MUNICIPAL uoui4uj_L MARCH 1 , 1974, 9 00 A M It has not b en'.: ,, since our last meeting and it seems that we have not accompli hed ary much since then We have been busy, however, and things have been gong reasonably well. Ralph Brown, Art Bauer, Reg Campbell, John Jeffery, Harold Howe, Russ Horvey, Glenn Smyth and myself attended the Regional Conference in High Rivet on Wednesday, January 23. It was a good Conference, with some good in ormation brought out We presented the two resolutions that had beer agreed upon by the Council here and added two more resolutions that we made up in High River. I will mention these later The Agricult ral Advisory Committee held their first meeting in the United Churcl basement on Thursday evening, February 7, 1974 There was a good atten ance to this meeting „ although all who had been invited did not atte d Morley Douglas, Regional Director, was one of the guest speake s and presented considerable information Ron Moore was also invited as a guest speaker and spoke on a form of co-operative farm for thiE area on which experiments could be carried out on ,, farming practices that could pertain to this area The next meeting of the Advisory Committee is slated for March 7. I attended a meeting of the Three hills and District Seed Cleaning Plant on Wed esday evening, February 13, 1974. I was very impressed with the Plant Board and fount' the meeting very interesting They discussed th possibility of replacing one of their cleaning machines with a larger machine They decided to have a delegation meet with our Agricultural Service Board today to discuss the possibi- lity of some assistance on she purchase of this machir.e from the Municipal District of Kneehilul and the Privincial Government I feel that we can feel very proud of the work that this plant is doing for our area I is considered one of the top plants in Alberta. Russel, Glenn and myself atte-ided a meeting of the Drumheller and District Agricultural Society in the Municipal `'ouncil chambers on the afternoon of Thursday, January 17 One interesting point that came up was the disatisfaction of the people in this area in the service that the Department of Culture, Youth and Recreation have given to the 4-H Clubs in the area This has resulted, partially, from the rel ctance of the people in the area who are involved in 4-H to accept this new Department in taking over 4-H and a general lack of commi ications Also, the people in 4-H had been receiving tremendous s rvice from our office from Dan Peters and Gordon Park. It is also e Bier to deal with an office in the area rather than having to wo k through Calgary. C FORM T1 149 SPECIA! Iq N FORM T1 149-P SPECIAL SPECIAL CONFERENCE REPORT AND AGRICULTURAL FIELDMANtS REPORT COMBINED MEETING WITH MUNICIPAL COUNCIL MARCH 4, 1974, 9 00 A M P.2 We attended the Wild Oat Meeting which was held at Olds on Wednesday, February 6 This was a very good meeting with some good speakers with a lot of inf rmation presented There was approximately 750 people in attendanCE she one problem that was mentioned w_, that there was no time for uestions Russ, Glenn and I attendee this meeting and were all imp essed with the large crowd and the speakers The Barley S minar that was to be held here on Friday, March 8 will be held in Olds now. I am not sure of the reasons why or when this meeting will be held It is unfortunate that we lost it On Friday, F bruary 22, Russ, Glenn and I attended the Farm Management Course at Tr chu and showed slides and gave talks on weeds, warbles and erosion We would be interested in attending meetings of any kind to do t e same. Should any of you know of a meeting in your areas that w uld be interested in this information, we would be pleased to atitend Russ and I c 21 and 24 The number o certainly be the 1080 bai this winter. and sent out confirmed th We have not We had hoped rates will n this and jus be as close a guide ecked four of the 1080 baits on Monday and Friday, January would estimate that one third of the baits had been eaten. calls that we have had for cyanide and strichnine have n reduced this winter This would partly be due to s and the extremely good prices paid for coyote pelts The coyote head that Glenn picked up at Lynn Gustafsonts to Lethbridge for tests has been reported on and it was t there was no evidence of rabies one anything about revamping the custom rates for 1974 to obtain the Pr,,.incial rates as a guide but these t be out until April. Possibly, we should go ahead on increase each rate by an agreed percentage This could s we could come even by using the Provincial rates as We have had the pollution equipment taken off the I H C 2 -ton truck and on some tests that we have made, we have estimated the increase in mileage to be from 11 miles per gallon to anywhere from 15 miles to 17 miles per gallon There is only a 12 gallon gas tank on this truck We p an on putting on an auxiliary tank if this is permissable The performance has also been somewhat better I have been assisting in instructing a Drapery Course which has been held every Tuesday, on a weekly basis since `anuary 15 We have one afternoon left to complete this course This appears to be somewhat away from Agriculture but it has been presented to farm ladies. We have been having a bit of a problem with picture frames for the certificates that are given out on anniversaries and birthdays The workmanship is good but we are always running out of these frames When we get a rush call for a certificate to be framed, we sometimes have a problem meeting the date that is is required I would appreciate a different s stem that we could work with. The cost of reg1..stra*, .on aaused considerable dissension as the cost of a social eve-ni.rig and buffet luncheon was included in the cost. he cost was $1.5 1%C and t his included everything along with a tick t for your wife or girlfriend The dissension resulted f=^om those who had. not brow -it their wives or who did not plan on ai,tend-ing t. is social function suppose that it cost a specific amount to p t on such a soc-i_al and it didn't really matter to arrange- ments whether or not you brought your partner or even attended The wine an cheese party wa3 good and ended up with a film which was produced in the Hanna and Carbon areas on urban development. The f lm ZTas ve y interesting as it had a number of good points and included pe ple that we kne-v sen both areas The first d ?_ng of re -so a Tti e' come b Agriculture point Dr. talk and ga Ly of the Conference was made up of talks and the present- _utions We heard some very informing talks starting with r Deputy Mayor of Edmonton Doctor Horner, Minister of gave a short 6aj_k which was quite informative and to the Purnell, Deputy M_nzster of Agriculture, gave quite a long re answer- to a number of questions also 4 CONFERENCE REPORT AND AGRICULTURAL FIELDMANTS REPORT S ECIAL COMBINED MEETING WITH MUNICIPAL COUNCIL MARCH 4, 1974, 9 00 A M P 4 The afternoon was spent mostly on resolutions There were over sixty resolutions pLresented with a good number of them being carried. The resolutions ware on many factors, such as warbles, acts and regula- tions, etc All pertaining to agriculture and A S B work I feel that a good resolu ion can too easily be defeated by people who are not aware of the ituations The resolution that we presented on a Specialist Re der to condense information being sent out to the various fields was de eated I felt that this was a direct result of one man stating t at he felt that all of this information should be read. I felt that Uie resolution was clear enough and was sure that it would have passed o I would have talked again on it I feel that this same thing ha pened on the majority of the resolutions that were defeated. These resolutions are actually only recommendations but they are treaed as though they are going to be a hard and fast rule once they are accepted I had the opportunity of talking with a panel on Wednesday morning. These talks presented some quest ons that were presented to workshop groups for discussion and recommendations I felt that this was good but the presentations from these groups were so rushed that there was not time to ask questions on them I had suggested in my talk that we should have a Regional man to work with Fieldmen and Service Boards It was recommended by the workshop that this was not necessary as the D A and Assistant D A could do this. This would be good but these people are getting so busy with other work that some of their work is now being done by Fieldmen As I stated before, our resolution for a Specialist Reader was defeated I do not know how much people expect of our D A.'s and Assistants. It would appear to me that there is not enough time allowed for all that is presented We held a Fieldman's Association meeting starting at 3 20 P M which was to be over at 5 00 P M It lasted until 7 00 P M and it had to be rushed to get it finished I feel that this meeting coul be part of the Conference and any Council of Farmer Members coul attend to listen to the problems that are presented. Possibly the Conference could be held for one additional day This would give time to include the Fieldmants Association Meeting and the presenting of more questions to panels and workshop personnel I would like to thank the Municipal Council of Kneehill and the Agricultural Service Board for the opportunity of attending the Conference I am sure that much good will come out of it even though I felt that it was not complete.
