Agricultural Fieldman's Report
Agricultural Service Board imleeting, Tuesday July 17, 1973
Work has progressed quite
that have had to be made on account
are doing a very good job
favorably with the exception of minor changes
of weather and breaks. I feel that the boys
The crops throughout the area may be classed as good to excellent.
It would appear that the majority of the crops have been sprayed for weeds
Generally, weeds appear to be under control
We have worked on a few patches of Toad Flax with some reports of ot.
We have found a few patches of Field Bindweed in the area. There have been a
number of reports on Black Henbane. tide sprayed one patch but we have not seen
the results
We have had very little livestock spraying to do recently, and tree
spraying has fallen off The boys did spray a considerable number of shelter -
belts with apparently good results Two of the boys have been doing roadside
spraying when the weather and wind permits They appear to be getting good
control We ordered more Acutrol for foam spraying as it appears to help con-
siderably when spraying roadsides Barry Dau has started cultivating trees and
mowing parks. We hope to have all of the school yards mowed by the time school
starts
Elton Kober has started seeding roadsides. We plan to try to get on
road as soon as possible after it has been graded This will keep the new
glades up to date and we will attempt to catch up on the other roads between
times I have discussed this with Ted Paquette and we plan on working together
on this as much as possible Reg Campbell arranged a work -bee out at the
Tolman Bridge Park and we were able to fix the pump and shingle the roof on the
camp kitchen Die had a wet day two weeks ago and we were able to get the camp
kitchen at Keiver's Lake shingled It is costing in the neighborhood of $130.00
for each camp kitchen We were also able to get some more painting done out at
Keiver's Lake.
We have had a few problen.7 with some of the equipment. We took the
rear end out of the one -ton truck This tied us up a little. We are continu-
ously breaking shackle bolts in the trailer that we use for transporting
equipment Our latest episode was to wreck one wheel and axle It appears that
this trailer is too light for transporting the big tractor. I ordered a spray
boom that we use on one of the sprayers for placing demonstrations and it appears
to be working well I also ordered a Cyclone Grass Seeder for broadcasting seed
on the spots that are hard to get at with the tractor vle have not mounted this
yet but we plan to shortly after this meeting It scares me to see the shoulders
of the roads seeded where in some cases they are quite steep I feel that we
should have one dual wheel on this tractor to give more protection from tipping over.
I took two of the boys to Strathmore one rainy day to see some work done
in the County of Wheatland One thing impressed them, and that was that there
can be more one-man operation work done here We plan to convert as much as
possible to one-man operations, with the consent of the Board
We have placed a number of demonstrations out in the area I have not
been able to follow these up as closely as I should but will attempt to do some
more work on these in the future
We have done a survey on the rape acreage. I am sure that we do not
have all the farmer's reports but we have received a good number which will make
a basis for our work. It is expected that the Bertha will be working about the
same time as last year.
I am enjoying the work and find it to be quite a challenge I feel that
the boys are doing a good fob and that by the end of the year we will feel that
we have accomplished something

Discussion was then held concerning our charging
for spraying and Mr G.0 . Ward moved that a SPRAYING CHARGES
minimum of 1 hour be charged for all spraying
except cattle. Carried
Mr G.G King reviewed several sections of
the Wee Control Act and regulations as follows.
He stat(d basically in Section 28 that the local
authority is now in charge of all weeds on
Municipal roads Section 27 states that every
occupant of land must destroy weeds Section 9
states that Council may by by-law make the farmer
responsible for weeds to the middle of the road
He further stated that this had been taken care
of at t e last Council meeting
Mr King further reported that Section 33 of the
Weed Control Act states that no person shall
deposit weed seeds anywhere where weeds may spread
Section 12 states that every local authority
shall make available i'isposal sites for all
weed seeds. He further suggested that the
secretary order copies of the Weed Control Act
and regiLlations for each member of the Service
Board Mr G C. Ward moved we designate
Torrington -Allingham, and Swalwell nuisance
grounds for dumping weed seeds which are to
be checked by the Ag Fieldman and sprayed when
necessary Carried
Policies of the Municipal District Agricultural
Service Board were then briefly discussed
1 Gully filling projects - Moved by Mr. Gordon
Ward that the farmer should pay 1/3 of the
cosb, the Department pay 60% of the cost
and the M.D. pays the balance of all larger
projects, and on small projects, the M.D
wilL supply the grass seed Carried
2 Roadside seeding - Generally agreed that
thi3 should be done as much as possible
wit the tractor with the balance to be done
wita the broadcastor, including Borrow pits
3. Roa side spraying - Should be concentrated
on brush and new growth of trees along roads
and patches of persistent perennials
4 Roadside Mowing - It was decided that the
Service Board should mow all secondary
roads in the Municipal District Rough
calculations were, that this would take
approximately 1 month averaging 4 miles
an hour for roughly 425 miles of secondary
roads Mr R G Campbell moved we price
out a new mower to mow our secondary road
system Carried Mr Soder than a$ked about
a few of his problems He stated Mr Elton
Xo er had offered his truck to have the
se der mounted on his truck if the Municipal
District would pay him mileage Mr Soder
stted that his truck is not available most
ti es and figures that once he catches up
hi truck should become freer He also stated
